Many people have contributed to the study of Psychology. One of these great contributors is Jean Piaget, a Swiss psychologist. He is mostly known for his theory of cognitive development. Jean Piaget used his own life as well of the lives of his own children to develop this theory. He believed that the thought process between children and adults were different and thus that began the process of Cognitive Development. Jean Piaget is a Swiss psychologist who was born on August 9, 1986. He is one of the most influential figures in the history of psychology. At the age 11, he had already started his career as a researcher by writing a paper on an albino sparrow (www.verywell.com/jean-piaget-biography). He continued his studies and later received his PH.D in Natural Sciences (www.biography.com/people/jean-piaget). While he was in Paris, Piaget studied newborns through adolescences. He came up with many interesting findings and facts about cognitive development (www.simplypsychology.org/piaget). Jean Piaget developed a theory that states that children develop cognitively through four developmental stages, sensorimotor, pre-operational, concrete operational and formal (Rathus, 2016, p97). Adventures Of Huckleberry Finn Story Essay The story follows young Huckleberry as he floats down the Mississippi River on his raft. On his journey he is accompanied by his friend Jim, a runaway slave. Throughout this novel Huckleberry Finn is influenced by a number of people he meets along the way. Huckleberry Finn was brought up in an interesting household. His father was rarely ever home and if he was, he was drunk, his mother had passed away so Huck had no one to really look out for him or take care of him. Huckleberry had the life that many teenagers dream of, no parents to watch you or tell you what to do, but when Huckleberry finds himself in the care of Widow Douglas and Miss Watson things start to drastically change. Widow Douglas and Miss Watson are two relatively old women and think that raising a child means turning him into an adult. In order for Huckleberry to become a young man, he was required to attend school, religion was forced upon him, and a behavior that was highly unlike Huck became what was expected of him by the older ladies. Not to long after moving in, Huckleberry ran away. When he finally came home he respected the ladies wishes and did what they wanted, but was never happy with it. When Tom Sawyer enters the picture, he is the immediate apple of Huckleberrys eye. Huckleberry sees Tom as the person that he used to be and was envious of Toms life. Huckleberry saw freedom and adventure in this young man and soon became very close friends with him. Huck then joins Toms littlegroup to feel that sense of belonging and adventure that he misses out on due to living with the two older ladies. Soon enough Huck realizes that all of Toms stories are a little exagerated and that his promises of adventure really are not that adventurous. Tom gives Huckleberry a false sense of excitement and eventually Huck leaves Toms gang. Later on Huckleberry s father, Pap, enters the story and tries to change everything about Huckleberry that the two women have taught him. Pap is a very unkempt person and his outward appearance is definitely the epitome of the saying, What you see is what you get. Paps comes in and demands that Huckleberry drops out of school, stops attending church, and that he stop reading and learning. After a couple of months of avoiding his father, Pap kidnaps Huckleberry and takes him to a small cabin in the woods far from civilization. Once again Huckleberry is given all of the freedom that he wants and once again Huckleberry becomes dissatisfied with the life that is bestowed upon him. Huckleberry comes to the conclusion that in order for him to stay alive, he must run away from his father and make his  father and everyone else believe that there is no way of finding him. Huckleberry decides to stage his own death while his father was away on one of his drunken bouts. After he stages his death he leaves for Jacksons Island in the middle of the Mississippi River. After Huckleberry leaves he meets up with Jim, Miss Watsons slave. They ran into each other after Huckleberrys arrival on Jacksons Island. As it turns out, Jim ran away because he overheard a conversation saying that he was to be sold to people in New Orleans. Jim makes Huckleberry feel comfortable about his decisions and about being himself. Huckleberry also realizes that he can learn a lot from Jim. Jim knows how to how to tell the future, how to tell the weather forecast, and is a very good judge of character. Huckleberry feels a need to be with Jim and feels very safe when they are together. Hucks new found friend prompts the decision to float down the Mississippi on a raft together. He then meets up with Tom Sawyer who proves to be a boy full of adventures that prove to be the work of a vivid imagination. Huckleberry becomes bored with the relationship and decides to go back to the two older ladies. After he comes back, his father, Pap kidnaps him and tries to return him to the life that he knew before. Huckleberry soon became unhappy with his new life because he felt that no one cared about him or what he did. His father was always drunk and forced him to drop out of school and stop attending church. Huckleberry finally becomes apart of a worthwhile relationship with a slave boy named Jim. Huckleberry and Jim are immediately inseparable as they decide to float down the Mississippi River together. In the end Huckleberry proves to have found a friendship worthy of having. A friendship that gives him all of the  aspects of all the earlier relationships, but one in which he feels comfortable being a part of.

Although we have marched, protested and have the 19th amendment stating our rights, we are still not quite equal. This research will explore the past and current state of women’s pay in the workplace, supported with data. We have made progress, but the problem is still there. The only way to eliminate a global problem such as this, is to fight together, both genders. Men must see women as their coworker and partner, not combatant or slave. Elizabeth Cady Stanton wrote what is known as the Declaration of Sentiments, in 1848. These sentiments stated facts about women, their rights and equality, that we are still fighting today. â€Å"When women did work they were paid only a fraction of what men earned† (Ruthsdotter, 1998). This was stated in the early 19th century, yet in what will soon be the 22nd century, some women are still paid this way. Women are still fighting to be considered an equal, a partner, a co-worker and not a combatant. Women prior to the 19th amendment were basically subject to their husbands. Their entire lives were solely based on their husbands. Their income, land, child custody, all other rights, and more were chosen, mandated and or owned by their spouse.   â€Å"In 1920, the Women’s Bureau of the Department of Labor was established to gather information about the situation of women at work, and to advocate for changes if needed. Many women’s activist became involved with campaigning for laws to protect women workers from abuse and unsafe conditions. The reason for the constant waves of change, and fighting back, is possibly due to men and women alike, can see a woman as more than just a female, with limited ability. Women and men have fought alongside each other for the equality of women; especially in the work place, for many years. Two researchers have taken a different approach in their research in women’s lives, that may contribute to the wage gap. One researcher discovered personality and wages have a correlation with wages for men and women. â€Å"Women score more highly on agreeableness than men, and because this trait is associated with lower wages in the labour market, men having lower agreeableness represents an advantage. On the other hand, men have a higher average score for intellect than women, and because this trait is rewarded in the wage setting, men’s higher score for this trait also represents an advantage.† (Nyhus, 2012)    This is profound research, not many people would involve the personalities of men and women and based wages on that. Of course, many will argue that should not be a factor, in the fairness of equal pay for women. Another researcher viewed the correlation of childcare and wages for women. â€Å"Countries where society has a positive mindset towards working mothers or about the desire for external childcare for children will provide more childcare, which will result in increases of fertility and female labor force participation and will reduce the wage gap. External childcare reduces the time women put into child rearing which increases fertility and labor supply and this decreases the gender wage gap. If everyone believes that childcare usage will be zero, the use of childcare will be zero, which leads to zero usage. Fertility and female labour supply will be consequently low and the wage gap will be high.† (Borck, 2014) Borck, could see the importance of having childcare facilities, that will provide care and childrearing for children, so women could work. We often do not think about childcare and afterschool programs to help working women. Borck could prove this in his research. These programs and childcare centers should be seen as positives, this will help lower the wage gap in the future, as long as our society can see the benefit it has on working women. So how big is the problem? â€Å"In 2015, women working full time in the United States typically were paid just 80 percent of what men were paid, a gap of 20 percent (Proctor et al., 2016). The gap has narrowed since 1960, due largely to women’s progress in education and workforce participation and to men’s wages rising at a slower rate. At the rate of change between 1960 and 2015, women are expected to reach pay equity with men in 2059. But even that slow progress has stalled in recent years. If change continues at the slower rate seen since 2001, women will not reach pay equity with men until 2152.† (Hill, 2017) These findings are frightening, if this continues this will have long term financial effects on working women. In 2015, 14 percent of American women ages 18–64 were living below the federal poverty level, compared with 11 per- cent of men. (Hill, 2017) So, what is causing it? So far researchers are discovering it is a combination of, occupation, higher education, and industry choices. I believe as women and men we need to eliminate what constitues as a specfic gender job.   If we eliminate the labels, and allow men and women to work where they will be their best, we can start to make more progress. If we could stop seeing women as unreliable due to child rearing, and believeing they can only work so ma ny hours, do only certain jobs, and base salary on their personality traits, child care, etc. We can possibly elimnate the gender wage gap sooner. Isaac Asimov Essays - Futurians, Isaac Asimov, Free Essays Isaac Asimov Isaac Asimov was born on January 2, 1920 in Petrouchi, Russia. His parents were Judah and Anna Asimov. Isaac also has a sister Veronica and a brother Stanley. In 1923 his family immigrated to the United States. He and his family grew up in Brooklyn, New York. In Brooklyn his family ran a small candy and magazine store. This is one of the places where Asimov began to learn about printing. Also it was here that Asimov learned good business and self-discipline skills (Bloom, 251). Asimov attended school and was a very bright student. He went to college at Columbia University. He graduated from there with his masters degree in Chemistry in 1941. His career was cut short though because in 1942 he moved to Philadelphia Naval Yard to work for the war. In 1945 he entered the army. In July of 1946 he was discharged from the army and he moved around for a few years till settling in West Newton, Massachusetts with Gertrude. It is there that he raised his family (Seiler,8). Asimov married Gertrude Blugerman on July 26th, 1942. They met on a blind date on Valentines Day. In 1955 their first son was born they named him David. Four years later their daughter Robyn Joan was born. Asimov met another woman Janet Jepson at a mystery writers banquet. The two of them were immediately attracted to one another. In 1970 when Gertrude and Asimov separated he moved in with Janet. His divorce to Gertrude was officialized on November 16th, 1973. On November 30th, 1973 an official of the Ethical Culture Society married Asimov and Janet in her home. They did not have any children (7). Asimov worked for many years of his life before become just a writer. His first job was in 1929. When Asimovs mother became ill and could no longer work at the family business. This is where Asimov first learned his skills he would carry for the rest of his life. He was a hardworking diligent man. After the war and everything Asimov became an instructor at the Boston University of medicine. He was promoted to assistant professor in December of 1951. On July 1st, 1958 he gave up his teaching job and became a writer. Finally in 1979 he was promoted to professor (9). Being a very diligent writer Asimov wrote more than eight hours a day, seven days a week. Although he was also preoccupied with writing he made time to get out and do things. In 1971 he joined the Dutch Treat Club. They were a group who met every Tuesday at a hotel for lunch. Another group, which Asimov was a part of, was the Baker Street Irregulars. This was a group of Sherlock Holmes fans. And although Asimov admitted to not liking Holmes that much he did love to make toasts and speeches at banquets. One of his favorite things to do was sing and he belonged to 2 other groups the Gilbert and Sullivan Society. There were two additional societies, which Asimov belonged to that influenced some of his stories (10). At the young age of eleven years old Asimov began writing. With his first attempt at writing he began The Greenville Chums at College. This was a story based on the lives of 3 young boys living in a small town. At first Asimov gave up writing, for he did not think he knew what he was doing. However, his whole attitude changed when at school one day he told the story he had written. His friend was impressed with it and wanted to borrow the book when Asimov finished it. This gave Asimov the confidence he needed to begin a writing career that would last a lifetime. Asimovs first published writing was in his high schools newspaper column. He wrote a humorous story called Little Brothers.(12) Asimovs first published story was in 1939 it was entitled Marooned Off Vesta. This story was featured in the magazine Astounding Science Fiction. The astounding publisher of this magazine was John W. Campbell Jr. He and Asimov had a close relationship and it was this that gave Asimov his beginning of a prosperous career. As a result of the differences, children there are various strategies that are used to enhance childhood development. Different strategies are used depending on a child because every child has unique needs. In the given case where Sara exposes loneliness character, various strategies can be used to enhance her social participation. One of the ways that Sara can be helped is by encouraging her to befriend more sociable child. This would make Sara be influenced by the sociable child to become social. This may take time but after sometimes but after sometimes Sara would start following her friends actions. By this, her confidence will also be build up gradually. The child who she is encouraged to be friends with should be younger than she is. This will help her to be the guide and senior, which will help her increase her self esteem. She will be in a position to feel the responsibility and she will learn a lot because her mind will analyze some situations. This will also help her improve her communication skills. (Cassidy & Asher, 1992). Sara should also be encouraged to join group activities. This will assist her to, as she will require communication and socializing. She will be able to lean to express herself in front of the group members and share her abilities. Her participation will also make her feel proud of her achievements, which will act as one way of boosting her confidence. This process may not be easy at the start because she may be hesitant but by being shown that this is a safe activity, she will get attracted. She should be guided to start participating in small groups, which will not scare her because she cannot be ignored easily. This will also enhance her chances of leading the group because there will be fewer choices. When she is comfortable in the small group, then the group can be increased in size gradually. This will make her adapt to social life in the school and she will finally be able to socialize fully with other children. Sara can also be helped to stop her loneliness by being given specific tasks. This should be applied at home and in school. Think again Heres one you likely havent heard of: read a short story by Franz Kafka before your exam and you may come out of it with an improved test score. The short story in question is a surreal work by Kafka called A Country Doctor. It was selected by post-doctoral researcher Travis Proulx (of the University of California, Santa Barbara) and Professor of Psychology Steven J. Heine (University of British Columbia) in their 2009 study specifically because of its absurdist elements. The hypothesis behind their research was that the exposure to a strange and unnerving stimulus would lead the brain to look for structure and order in any subsequent activity. The Method: The method of Proulx and Heines study involved exposing a test group to the surreal stimulus (in this case A Country Doctor) and then administering a grammar test to the group. The test was made up of an artificial-grammar learning task in which [subjects] were exposed to hidden patterns in letter strings. They were asked to copy the individual letter strings and then to put a mark next to those that followed a similar pattern. A control group was also tested; these subjects pre-test reading consisted of a substantially edited version of Kafkas text, which arranged the story in a more straightforward plot structure. Proulx and Heine labeled the surreal stimulus as a Meaning Threatsomething that fundamentally does not make sensewhile the absence of a surreal stimulus was categorized as having No-Meaning Threat. The Results: It was quickly apparent that Proulx and Heines hypothesis was correct; the test subjects who had been exposed to the Meaning Threat (A Country Doctor) not only found more patterns within the letter strings presented to them, but they were also correct in their findings more of the time than the test subjects who were not exposed to that surreal stimulus. â€Å"People feel uncomfortable when their expected associations are violated, and that creates an unconscious desire to make sense of their surroundings.† -Travis Proulx It turns out that the test subjects were so unsettled by the absurdism in Kafkas short story that their brains felt compelled to find order and meaning afterwards, as if to make up for the nonsensical nature of what came before it. So, how can this be applied to your studies? Well, besides reading A Country Doctor before a test, there are a number of other Meaning Threats you could apply to your life. You just have to understand what exactly a Meaning Threat is. You need something that challenges your very nature and the way you innately look at the world. When, for example, we think of fire, we instinctively associate it with heat. Now imagine placing your hand over a flame and feeling an icy coldness, the exact opposite of your expectations. Pretty disturbing, right? Thats exactly what a threat to meaning is. Meaning is an expected association within one’s environment. A Meaning Threat is therefore something that doesnt make sense. When a committed meaning framework is  threatened, people experience an arousal state that prompts  them to affirm any other meaning framework to which they  are committed. Exposing yourself to mind-opening (or mind-bending) works similar to Kafkas will spur you to find patterns and structure in other works. These can include the works of Surrealist painters, or certain movies,  like Blue Velvet by David Lynch or Un Chien Andalou by Salvador Dali and  Luis Buà ±uel.
